Hip Anatomy

To better understand the procedures discussed, it is important to understand the basic anatomy of the Hip.


Some of the terms used on this site include:

Acetabulum : the concave surface of the pelvis. The head of the femur meets with the pelvis at the acetabulum, forming the hip joint.

Articular Cartilage : the smooth lining that covers the surfaces of the ball-and-socket joint of the hip

Articular Surface : the surface of a joint at which the ends of the bones meet.

Femoral Canal : conical in shape and about 2 cms long. It is the space between the femoral vein and the inner wall of the femoral sheath.

Femoral Head : the highest part of the thigh bone (femur).
